I enjoyed working with cardboard to create the spheres. It is fun for me to explore new ways to use a material. It took some time to learn how to work with it, but in the end I believe that we became friends.
Sphere #1
Now turning a flat material into a spherical structure is a definite challenge. I started out by viewing the sphere as if it had planes. I turned those planes into hexagonal shapes, then transferred them into cardboard. I chose hexagons because it gave me a circular surface with edges.
I came to find that do to imprecise cutting my hexagons had to turn into other shapes in certain locations in order to make it all fit together. The hot glue also became a filler in some cases. I also discovered that as the hexagons went from flat side by side into being connected at various angles to each other that slight modifications had to be made to get a good fit.
Sphere #2
When I focused on the internal structure of a sphere, I envisioned several flat circles stacked on top of one another to create one side. Each circle getting only slightly smaller than the one underneath it. This process took a lot of precise cutting not only to get the diameter just right but also to match both sides. Unfortunately my cutting wasn't precise enough and the end result didn't look like what I had hoped.
Sphere #3
I came up with a slot system to create a sphere with no glue.
This
plan
didn't
work
so
I
modified
my
design
and
I
got
my
Finished Piece!
